IPL Emerging Player Award Winners From 2008 to 2020

The Indian Premier League, every year, sees an enormous amount of talent on display. There are some extremely talented domestic and international players who are playing to impress the selectors and make their name all around the world. However, the IPL is the best platform for some of the younger cricketers. With the amount of talent that is present in India, it is a tough ask to make it to the national side. But nevertheless, the Indian Premier League has given India some excellent prospects who have done great for India and have a bright future.

There is an award in IPL called the “Emerging Player of the Year” which is given to the best youngster of the tournament. Previously, the award was known as the “Best U-19 Player” in the inaugural season and the “Best U-23 Player” in 2009 and 2010. Afterward, it was called “Rising Star of The Year. 2013 saw the award being labeled as “Best Young Player of the Season”. Lastly, it has been renamed “Emerging Player of the Year”, since 2014.

In this article, we will be discussing the IPL emerging player rules and criteria for the award. Besides, the complete IPL emerging players list from 2008 to 2020 will be discussed.

IPL Emerging Player Award Rules

The IPL Emerging Player criteria is pretty simple. There are a total of four rules that the player should be fulfilling. Afterward, the award will be given to him based upon his performance as compared to the other youngsters.

Following are the IPL Emerging Player rules.

• The player should be born after 1^st April 1994.
• Shouldn’t have played in more than 25 IPL matches (As per the start of the current season).
• Should not have played more than 5 test matches and 20 ODIs.
• Shouldn’t have won the Emerging Player award previously.

2008: Shreevats Goswami

Goswami played for the Bangalore franchise in 2008 after coming from the World Cup winning U-19 team of India. He didn’t have much impact and only made 82 in 4 matches, but the half-century he made had some glimpses of the talent that he has.

Unfortunately, Goswami wasn’t able to live up to his potential and had a not-so-good IPL career afterward, averaging just 14.65 having played for 4 different teams.

2009: Rohit Sharma

Probably the best of the lot. The Hitman has been the most successful IPL captain in history having won 5 titles. Besides, he has been a constant part of India across all formats and is considered possibly the best opener of the current generation.

Sharma became the IPL emerging player winner after making 362 in the 2009 IPL for the Deccan Chargers (Now discontinued).

2010: Saurabh Tiwary

A classy and hard-hitting left-hander emerged in 2010 for Mumbai Indians. Having racked up a total of 419 runs for the franchise, Saurabh got a call from the national selectors. Tiwary played 3 ODIs for India but couldn’t really make an impact. Besides, he hasn’t been consistent in the IPL as well since 2010, having played for Bangalore, Delhi, and Pune (Now-Defunct).

2011: Iqbal Abdulla

The left-arm bowling all-rounder spun a web around the batsmen in 2011, picking up 16 wickets. But not all stories have a happy ending. Iqbal didn’t manage to pick up more than 6 wickets in a season from 2012 to 2017 and has not been picked up by any franchise since.

2012: Mandeep Singh

Mandeep Singh looked a promising talent in 2012 and made up more than 400 runs in the season. However, he hasn’t been able to live up to his name since. Mandeep played for the national team in 2016, but as the competition in India is extremely tough, he was dropped soon.

2013: Sanju Samson

Sanju Samson won the Emerging player award in 2013, however, he is still one of the most talented batsmen out there. This season as well, he played an extraordinary inning in his first match, making a century and almost single-handedly defeating Punjab. Unfortunately, fell 4 runs short. He has represented India in 7 T20Is but has a lot more potential than that.

2014: Axar Patel

Axar picked up 17 wickets in 2014 for KXIP and won the emerging player award. He has represented India in all three formats. Recently, in the test series against England, he looked unplayable and got 27 wickets in 3 test matches.

2015: Shreyas Iyer

Shreyas won the award in 2015 for his splendid batting display. He has been a part of the national side recently as well. Besides, he was the captain of Delhi Capitals this year but unfortunately got injured and replaced by Rishabh Pant.

2016: Mustafizur Rahman

To become the only foreign cricketer to win the award requires some remarkable performance. The Fizz did exactly that. He took 17 wickets at an economy of just 6.90, playing a huge role in the Sunrisers Hyderabad’s IPL victory.

2017: Basil Thampi

Thampi played for the now-defunct Gujarat Lions in 2017 and had some great performances. He picked up 11 wickets in his debut season. However, from there, it has only been downhill for him up till now. In the next three seasons, he got only 6 wickets in 8 matches and went wicketless in the latest Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

2018: Rishabh Pant

The Australian Nightmare, Rishabh pant won a well-deserving emerging player award in 2018 after making a huge load of runs, 684 in total. He had five fifties and a hundred to his name. This year, he’ll be leading the Delhi franchise.

2019: Shubman Gill

Labeled as the next Virat Kohli by his fans, Shubman Gill is one of the classiest batsmen out there. In his 2019 season, he made just below 300 runs, 296 in total. Afterward, in the last edition, he made 440. Gill has also been India’s opener in test matches recently.

2020: Devdutt Padikkal

Imagine outscoring Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers. Devdutt Padikkal did exactly that in his debut season last year. Making a total of 473 runs which were more than Kohli’s and ABD’s. He is in some sublime form having made 4 back-to-back centuries in the Vijay Hazare Trophy recently. Unfortunately, he was tested positive for Covid-19 and is currently not part of the playing 11.
